Retirement - DFP

The Department of Family Practice supports Family Physicians in the transition to retirement. While you may feel overwhelmed by the concept of closing your practice, there are a number of resources to help you along the way.

The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) has developed a number of Guidelines to assist in the closing of your practice including:

Winding Down Your Practice is an informative article published by The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) regarding retirement which includes information on continued CMPA protection in retirement. Visit CMPA for additional information.

Through their Business of Medicine Program, Doctors Nova Scotia offers a comprehensive module entitled “Guidance for Physicians when Closing a Practice”. This module includes sample letters to inform your patients and when to notify your staff.

The Department of Family Practice can help reroute your Nova Scotia Health Authority patient reports (lab, diagnostic imaging, etc.). Please print the Nova Scoita Health Authority Physician Change Form, complete and fax to 902-473-2761 to deactivate your file in the Physician Database. From your retirement date onward, your patients presenting to a Nova Scoita Health Authority registration desk will no longer be able to select you as their family physician for new tests.

If you have any questions or require assistance accessing any of the above forms and links, please contact the Department of Family Practice directly at tel: 902-487-0209.
