LifeLines: Preparing for Likely Health Care Strike - April 19, 2012

Capital Health has been notified that NSGEU Local 42 intends to strike at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25.

A reminder, that during a strike: 

  • Surgeries, tests and other areas of care will focus only on situations where life is in danger.
  • Care will continue for patients already on dialysis, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
  • Diagnostic imaging and blood testing will be limited to emergency cases.

To ready for this:

  • The District Surgical Group begin meeting today to review cases and make recommendations to the Clinical Operations Committee.
  • Voice Services has suspended automated clinical reminders for ambulatory visits starting April 25.
  • Patients whose appointments or surgeries need to be postponed are being contacted directly.
  • Surgeries have begun to be postponed.

As a result:

Monday, April 23:

  • day surgery only
  • normal clinic volumes

Tuesday, April 24:

  • emergency surgery only
  • normal clinic volumes

Wednesday, April 25 and until strike is over:

  • emergency surgery only
  • most outpatient clinics closed
