LifeLines: VRE outbreak and how you can prevent its spread - May 2, 2012

  • There is an outbreak of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) at Capital Health.
  • All employees and physicians must be vigilant about hand washing and contact measures to control the spread.
  • VRE swabs are required upon transfer, repeated 24 hours later.
  • Contact measures must remain in place until culture results are complete.Thorough cleaning (scrubbing) and disinfecting of all touch surfaces and equipment are a must.
  • Patients transferred from 8.2, 8.4 at the Halifax Infirmary Site and 3 West at Dartmouth General Hospital must be placed on Contact Precautions when arriving on the receiving unit.
