Waste Management - Managed Services

Biohazardous Waste

Hospital staff should place waste in the appropriate containers for housekeeping staff to removed it from the work area on a regular basis.

Human Anatomical Waste which consists of human tissues, organs, or any body part. Disposal: Placed in a red bag and then place on top of the waste in the yellow shipping cart.

Animal Waste which refers to any animal or animal part and is likely to be produced in research trials. Disposal: Place directly in a yellow bag.

Microbiology Lab Waste of which there are two components.

  • Cultures, stocks or specimens or attenuated vaccines. Disposal: Either place directly in a yellow bag or they may be autoclaved prior to being placed in the yellow bag.
  • The lab materials that may have contacted these wastes such as vials, lipid bottles, test tubes, culture bottles, or pipettes. Disposal: These wastes are disposed of by placing breakable objects in a labelled box, tape securely and then placed in a yellow bag.

Blood and Body Fluids which makes up the majority of the biohazardous waste stream. It consists of any item, saturated or dripping with blood or body fluids, but excludes urine and feces. Disposal: Place directly in the yellow bag.

Sharps Waste such as needles, syringes, blades or lab glass capable of causing punctures or cuts. This is the most dangerous type as it poses the greatest risk to workplace safety so greater caution is required. Disposal: Place in approved labelled sharps containers or buckets. When they are filled to the full line, replace the container with a new one and place the full one on top of the waste in the yellow shipping cart.

Cytotoxic Waste includes predominantly pharmaceuticals, chemotherapy agents or antineoplastics. Disposal: Placed in either a receptacle lined with a yellow bag or a sharps container, both displaying the cytotoxic symbol. It is then prepared for disposal by boxing, labelling and placed on top of the waste in the yellow shipping cart.

All other waste should be disposed of as general waste in a black bag.
