Seniors Mental Health Services
The Seniors Mental Health Services is a tertiary Geriatric Psychiatry resource for the province, and the only Geriatric Psychiatry postgraduate educational training centre in Atlantic Canada. Our specialized interdisciplinary team offers education, research and community capacity building throughout the province. We link to all zones of the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) via the NSHA Nova Scotia Seniors Mental Health Network offering provincial education and knowledge exchange for mental health care providers, primary care physicians, and general psychiatrists.
Clinically, our service provides assessment, consultation and time-limited treatment of seniors with complex presentations that cannot be adequately addressed by family physicians, geriatricians or general adult psychiatrist and their related teams. Our provincial resources include specialized outreach, outpatient, inpatient and seniors mental health promotion programs. The Fountain of Health Initiative is a national resource for optimal psychosocial aging (www.fountainofhealth.ca) developed through our Seniors Healthy Living Program. This program offers prevention, education and training for seniors, health care professionals and caregivers and a novel cognitive behavioural therapy treatment group for seniors with depression and anxiety.
Criteria for referral for clinicial assessments by the service is patients over the age of 65 with:
- new onset of psychiatric symptoms
- chronic mental illness complicated by complex medical or cognitive issues
- dementia with prominent psychiatric features
To access resources of the Seniors Mental Health Service, a referral form must be completed by a physician. Other health care professionals, family members or individuals themselves can contact the service to find out more about accessing resources.
