Urgent Care Centre

Citizens with urgent health problems expect timely access to health care in the most appropriate setting by the most appropriate provider. Three family practices in the East Dartmouth community work together to provide patients of Cole Harbour Family Medicine Centre, Pleasant Street Medical Group, and Woodlawn Medical Clinic with same-day access to medical care on the weekends for urgent, non life-threatening health conditions that require prompt treatment.

The family physicians on duty at the Urgent Care Centre are able to provide better continuity of care than is typically provided at a walk-in clinic and give patients a better option for urgent health conditions that can be treated by a family physician rather than visiting an emergency department.

One of the objectives of the Urgent Care Centre is to reduce the number of patients presenting in the emergency department with health conditions that can be treated by a family physician. Results have shown a reduction in the number of Urgent Care Centre patients visiting an emergency department with less urgent / non urgent complaints, when compared to the previous year. With these positive results, Primary Health Care is looking at the possibility of forming more Urgent Care Centres within the Capital Health district.
