Preceptor
The role of a preceptor is to supervise and evaluate students during their placements. Different disciplines use different terms for this role (e.g., agency field instructor, supervisor, clinical instructor, etc.). A preceptor usually supervises one student at a time, but in some cases may have two students at once, or may share supervisory responsibilities with a co-worker.
Responsibilities
- Provides basic orientation to the service area/department and introduce student to staff.
- Reviews relevant policies and procedures with the student, including confidentiality.
- Models professional practice.
- Identifys potential learning opportunities for the student.
- Assists students in identifying their learning needs.
- Uses effective teaching and learning strategies.
- Facilitates a supportive learning environment for the student.
- Contributes to the evaluation of student performance as requested by the educational institution.
