On January 10, 2012, Peter Graham visited the Central Laundry – a shared service delivered by Capital Health which provides laundry rental and processing to 11 sites in three health districts (Capital Health, South Shore and Colchester-East Hants) and the IWK Health Centre, as well as four local long term care facilities and certain Emergency Health Services sites. The Central Laundry also provides linen distribution services at the QEII Health Sciences Centre and Dartmouth General Hospital.
The Central Laundry facility, located on the Nova Scotia Hospital property in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is approximately 50 years old. In 2002, it underwent a $3.5-million upgrade including the installation of modern washers, dryers and a linen distribution system, providing improved energy efficiency, water utilization and ergonomics for staff. Though modernized 10 years ago, the facility is nearing capacity, and still has some very old, inefficient equipment in use, including a 1959 ironer.
