Employee Benefits

At Capital Health, the majority of our staff is unionized and governed by the terms and conditions of several collective agreements. We foster a collaborative approach with the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU), and the Nova Scotia Nurses Union (NSNU).

We have a variety of employment options available including permanent and temporary positions, with full-time and part-time hours, as well as casual relief opportunities.

As a permanent employee working at least 40 per cent status, you are eligible for an extensive, cost-shared benefits package that includes medical, dental, travel, life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance and long-term disability. Pension plan membership is available if you are in at least a 50 per cent position.

Depending on the status and duration, employees working in temporary positions are eligible for either a comprehensive benefits package or a percentage of your hourly rate in lieu of these benefits. Paid vacations, maternity leave benefits and general illness leaves are paid as outlined in the relevant Collective Agreement or Terms and Conditions of Employment.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to employees and their eligible dependents as a 24-hour, confidential, short-term counseling, advisory and information service.

You will be offered a comprehensive orientation program that introduces you to our facilities, programs and services and informs you of relevant information as it applies to your new role. Your department will also provide you with the job specific training you need to begin work in your area. We have numerous educators and educational programs to contribute to your learning as you build your career within Capital Health.

In recognition of our employees, we host many special events for staff and their families including summer BBQs, winter skating parties and long service award dinners.
