Gynecological Specimens

The Pap test is an important test for the detection of cervical cancer in women. It is one of the few tests that can detect early stages of cervical cancer. This test requires proper fixation of the specimen as well as accurate patient demographics and history for optimal results. Based on 2019 statistics, the Cytopathology Laboratory processed approximately 50,000 gynecological specimens.  The Cytopathology Laboratory follows the Bethesda System 2014 of reporting and recommendations. The gynecological laboratory operates from Monday to Friday - 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and weekends/holidays from 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Non-Gynecological Specimens

Non-Gynecological Specimens that are processed at the Cytopathology Laboratory include: urine, bronchials, fine needle aspirations, washings and fluids. Based on 2019 statistics, the Cytopathology Laboratory processed approximately 9250 non-gynecological specimens. The laboratory started processing all non-gynecological specimens using liquid based technology in 2003. The non-gynecological laboratory operates from Monday to Friday - 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays.

Semen Analysis Specimens

Semen Analysis testing assesses the quantity and quality of sperm in a semen sample. The Cytopathology Laboratory began processing semen analysis specimens in 2007 and follows the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) processing and reporting guidelines. Based on 2019 statistics, the Cytopathology Laboratory processed approximately 1500 semen analysis specimens.  Semen analysis requests are time sensitive and therefore it is important that all pertinent information be provided on the Semen Analysis Request Form.
